CO2 Valorization and Conversion Into Value-Added Chemicals

Global emissions of carbon dioxide have been increasing in the last few decades and the need to reduce such greenhouse gas in the atmosphere is nowadays one of the most urgent issues that cannot delay any longer. It is becoming everyday more evident that the storage of CO2 cannot represent a long-term solution, due to the high cost of the process. The most promising alternative is undoubtedly to convert CO2 into valuable chemicals or fuels (i.e., solar fuels) as novel attractive business opportunities boosting the transition towards the sustainable “defossilization” and “decarbonisation” of the worldwide economy.
The current webinar will deliver two lectures highlighting the recent developments and applications in the field of CO2 hydrogenation for fuels and value-added chemicals production. In the first lecture, Prof. Nor Aishah Saidina Amin will discuss on “A promising approach for photoreduction of CO2 into hydrogen using monolith coated carbon-doped photocatalyst". In the second lecture, Prof. Xin Tu (Liverpool University) will show the potential of plasma-enhanced catalysis for CO2 hydrogenation, giving a presentation with title 'Plasma-catalysis: An emerging technology for CO2 conversion under mild conditions'.

Dr. Leonarda Francesca Liotta, Institute of Nanostructured Materials, Palermo Research Division, Italy

Leonarda Francesca Liotta is Director of Research at the CNR-Institute for the Study of Nanostructured Materials (ISMN) and works in the team Materials and technologies for environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. In the 2013 and then in the 2017 she gained Qualification as full professor in Fundamentals of Chemical Science and Inorganic Systems. Dr Liotta is ranking in the World's Top 2% Scientists, she has (H index 42), is co-author of more than 200 articles/chapters published in international journals and books and she contributed to more the 300 International and National Conferences and informative works. Dr. Liotta has been invited Professor at the University Claude Bernard, Lyon 1, in 2014 and 2018; Invited Professor at Lille University in 2016 and Invited Professor in Dunkirk University, France in 2019. She coordinates several International and National Projects, she is responsible for the scientific part of the Memorandum of Understanding signed with Tomsk State University, Russia and with Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi’an, China and she is scientific coordinator of PhD exchange program financed by Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC). She is Member of the International Association of Catalysis Societies (IACS), member of the Management Committee of COST Action 17136 “Indoor Air Pollution network” and of COST Action 18224 “Green Chemical Engineering Network towards upscaling sustainable processes”. Dr. Liotta is Editor in chief of the Section “Catalytic Materials”, Catalysts MDPI and Guest Editors di several special issues of Catalysts.

Dr. Giuseppe Bonura, CNR-ITAE, Institute for Advanced Energy Technologies, Italy

Giuseppe Bonura is a Senior Researcher at CNR-ITAE, in Messina, Italy. In 2002 he graduated in Industrial Chemistry and in 2009 he awarded his Ph.D. in ‘‘Chemical Technologies and Innovative Processes” at the University of Messina. In 2017 he gained the qualification as an Associated Professor both in ‘‘Industrial Chemistry” and in ‘‘Chemical and Industrial Plant and Processes”. His main scientific interest concerns the field of heterogeneous catalysis, with main focus on the development of novel hybrid systems for chemical conversion of carbon dioxide into alternative fuels. In addition to numerous national and international conferences and seminars with several oral communications, he has already contributed to the production of over 270 scientific works, including more than 80 publications in International papers, several communications at National and International conferences, various technical-scientific reports related to contractual activities and the filing of 1 International patent. He is also editor of the RSC book “Sustainable Catalysis for Biorefineries” (Green Chemistry Series), editorial board member of the journal “Catalysts”, MDPI (ISSN 2073-4344) and Guest Editor of Special Issue “Supported Materials for Catalytic Application” of the journal “Materials” MDPI (ISSN: 1996-1944). He is responsible for several International and National research projects dealing with CCU technologies.

Prof. Dr. Nor Aishah Saidina Amin, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Malaysia

Professor Ir. Dr. Nor Aishah Saidina Amin is a Professor of Reaction Engineering, Head of the Chemical Reaction Engineering Group (CREG) at the School of Chemical and Energy Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Her expertise is in applied catalysis, reactor design and modelling, and also reaction engineering. She has three patents and 15 patent filings for her innovations. She has written three books, 6 book chapters and more than 200 Scopus-Indexed journal papers. Her Scopus h-index is currently at 48 with more than 8000 citations. She is a professional engineer and an IChemE fellow (FIChemE). In recognition of her scholarly activities, she received the Top Research Scientist Malaysia (TRSM) award in 2013 and 2018 by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM). She was also the winner of the Malaysia Research Star Award under the outstanding research on Global Warming and International Research Collaboration category in 2017 and 2018, respectively. She is recognized by the Web of Science as a Highly Cited Researcher in 2018. She serves on the Editorial Advisory Board for Energy Conversion and Management journal (Q1, I.F. 6.377), IOP SciNotes and Bulletin of Chemical Reaction Engineering and Catalysis (Scopus-Indexed). She provides industrial consultancy and is the Chairperson for Working Group 3 in Nanotechnology Technical Committee 229. She has successfully supervised 22 PhD and 23 Master students. More recently she was awarded the Leaders in Innovation Fellowship Award by the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK and Best of the Best Award at INATEX 2020 and is also a recipient of the PRGS 2.0 grant by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia.

Prof. Dr. Xin Tu, University of Liverpool, UK

Prof. Xin Tu is Chair of Plasma Catalysis in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics at the University of Liverpool (UK). He received PhD in Physics from the University of Rouen (CORIA CNRS UMR 6614, France) and PhD in Thermal Engineering from Zhejiang University (China) in 2007. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Centre for Surface Chemistry and Catalysis at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) from 2008 to 2009. In September 2009, he joined the University of Manchester (UK), working as a Research Associate in the School of Chemistry. He was appointed as a Lecturer at the University of Liverpool in 2012 and was promoted to Professor in 2019. He has been working for many years on interdisciplinary research at the interface of plasma science and catalysis directed towards environmental clean-up, fuel and chemical synthesis, and nuclear decommissioning. Significant efforts have been devoted to plasma-catalysis where the combination of non-thermal plasma and heterogeneous catalysis has been used as a promising and emerging low-temperature process for the oxidation of gas pollutants (e.g. VOCs and PAHs) in waste gas streams and the conversion of carbon and nitrogen sources such as CH4 activation, CO2 conversion, nitrogen fixation and biomass tar reforming.

On Wednesday, 17 March 2021, MDPI and the Journal Catalysts organized the 8th webinar on Catalysts, entitled "CO2 Valorization and Conversion Into Value-Added Chemicals".

The introduction was held by the Chairs of the webinar, Dr. Leonarda Francesca Liotta and Dr. Giuseppe Bonura. Leonarda Francesca Liotta is Director of Research at the CNR-Institute for the Study of Nanostructured Materials (ISMN) and works in the team Materials and technologies for environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. Giuseppe Bonura is a Senior Researcher at CNR-ITAE in Messina, Italy. He is responsible for several International and National research projects dealing with CCU technologies.

The first speaker to quick off this webinar was Prof. Dr. Nor Aishah Saidina Amin. She is Head of the Chemical Reaction Engineering Group (CREG) at the School of Chemical and Energy Engineering of the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and her presentation was entitled "A Promising Approach to Reduce CO2 Into Hydrogen Using Monolith Coated Carbon-Doped Photocatalyst".
